This term we are looking at Articles 28 and 29 from the Unicef Rights of the Child: we have the right to an education, and we have the right to develop our talents and abilities.
In Sapphire Class we have agreed that:
We have the RIGHT to express our ideas without fear of being laughed at by others. But we need to take the RESPONSIBILITY to listen to each other.
We have the RIGHT to work in a calm environment, therefore we need to be RESPONSIBLE and work without disturbing others.
We have the RIGHT to ask for help and to receive it when we need it. However, we have the RESPONSIBILITY to be attentive when we are being taught.
We have the RIGHT to use resources, but we need to ensure that we use them RESPONSIBILY; taking care of each other’s possessions and equipment in school.

During this term our central theme is The Victorians. All of our Humanities work will be involved in studying this period in history. Where- ever possible links will be made to other curriculum areas to enable the class to appreciate the impact this era had on the lives of many people across the globe and the influence it still has on our lives today.
History: What was life like for children living in Victorian times?
The children will further understand chronology, explore the everyday lives of poor children in the Victorian period, appreciate that some aspects of history may be interpreted in different ways.
D.T. :The Year 5 children will create appliquéd felt pictures with the intention of attaching them to
chair tidy-bags.
FOOD:Healthy Eating focus. Diet and Health. Food Production and processing.
ICT: The children will develop their basic keyboard skills, accessing databases. They will use emails to write to children in a school in Hungary.
R.E. Faith in History- looking at Victorian Christianity, a reformation society, the work of social reformers: Dr. Barnardo, William Booth, Elizabeth Fry. Missionaries and the British Empire. Family prayers and the stories Jesus told.

All the strands are revisited termly, when there are further opportunities to consolidate and extend the children’s knowledge and understanding.
It would be hugely beneficial if the children knew their multiplication tables; Year 5s their 2,3,4,5 and 10 times, the Year 6s ALL the times tables. The corresponding division facts also need to be known. Any extra practice you can give your child would be much appreciated and benefit them in the long term.
Science: Circulation: The children will explore the structure of the heart & lungs. The double circulation through the lungs & the rest of the body is explained & more about blood is learned. How does exercise affect pulse rate? Why is exercise good for us & what can harm the heart & circulation?
Music: In music this term the children will listen to a range of musical styles and express their views. They will develop their understanding of notation and play a range of tuned instruments.
