Geography: Studying Bishops Caundle

Learning & Support

We started by studying the grounds of our school. Whilst looking at what we could find, we took some time to study the trees as part of our Science learning. We are now able to identify deciduous and coniferous (evergreen) trees, and talk about what each part of the tree is important for.
On Tuesday 29th January we went on a village walk to explore our local area with Topaz class. The children who live in Bishops Caundle were given the responsibility to direct us to their road and house. We looked out for all of the local services and thought about how the houses are made.

On return to the classroom we were able to work as a class to sort pictures of things that could be found in a village compared to in a town.
Next the children explored Google Earth and were fascinated at what they could see as they compared what they had found on their walk to a birds-eye-view of the village.

For our home-learning task we will be using Google Earth to find our own houses and see what else we can see in our local area.
All children participated in creating 3D maps of Bishops Caundle. Year 1s worked in groups of 4 whilst Reception created a large scale map to cover the tables as a large group.

The class then explored the use of a compass and "North, South, East and West" before Year 1s wrote directions to help people navigate around their map.
